The castle was a dream come true!

Hi Lyndsay,

The castle was a dream come true! It was beautifully decorated — room after room — with a gorgeous pool and park. We loved our chef’s dinner, as well as gathering in the “blue room” each evening for aperitifs. We were able to sit outside behind the kitchen with candlelight, though the temps were cooler that week. We also enjoyed the hot tub, pool table, piano, and chessboard. We took your suggestion to visit Puy du Fou, and, as you said, were blown away. We hope to go back, as we didn’t make it to every show. Several people used the gym, a few rode bikes. We visited Chateau de Brissac and tasted white wine in Savennieres. We dined almost every night at the chateau and would walk the grounds to appreciate the lit-up chateau before bed. We were all amazed, looking through the books on the chateau’s refurbishment, at the effort and love poured into the place. Sleeping in the yellow bedroom, I discovered the small portraiture of the house itself painted on the door. The details — the cloth wall hangings, the painted ceilings, the tapestries and framed prints — were exquisite. The sound system allowed us to pipe Edith Piaf or Alain Souchon throughout. In short, it was spectacular.

Best,

Maria Bertrand

The property IS nothing short of extraordinary It would take a book to describe it . The owners and staff were very gracious and accommodating .My 25 year old son said it was the best trip of his life and he has taken a lot .We used this week for a family reunion of sorts and it couldn’t have been a better place. If you go make sure to take advantage of the private Chef. He prepared a 5 course fabulous gourmet dinner for 9 of us .We hope to return some day

A great experience…

“ We organize a family trip every year in France and rent a Chateau for the occasion, to discover each time a new region. This year, we booked Chateau de Vezins, and that was a great experience! The Chateau and the Park offer so many amenities to keep both  children and adults busy – a pool, a jacuzzi, a gym with sauna, while the young ones jump on the trampoline or chase the beautiful peacocks and ducks in the French Garden. Inside there’s so much space… while some are having a discussion in the living room facing the meditation garden, others are in the billiard room, or the TV room, or upstairs in the kids playroom.

We visited the Japanese Garden, a must see just 15 mins away and several Chateaux in the area. For the gourmet part we enjoyed a wonderful chef that came a few days to the Chateau and the covered market in Cholet.  And of course we are in a wine region with many wineries to visit and sample!

We had a wonderful time and the owner and staff were very welcoming and helpful – before, during and after our stay.”

Additional comments:
I usually don’t write reviews, but our stay at Chateau’ de Vezins was nothing less than spectacular! We invited 3 other couples to join us, and the chateau’ was so spacious, beautiful and well appointed that we had total privacy when we wanted, but were able to enjoy time together too! The owner, Gaelle, sent us all kinds of great things to do nearby…and we were able to do most of them! the Japanese Gardens were unbelievable…a must see. She also suggested Chef Sebastian…the owner of a nearby restaurant getting a Michelin Star…to prepare dinner for us one night at the chateau’. We did…and it was one of the highlights of our trip. He arrived at the chateau’, prepared an unbelievable multi course dinner for us and served us in the gorgeous dining room. It was by far the best meal we had on our entire trip to France. Then, to top it all off, he totally cleaned the kitchen for us! I can’t recommend the Chateau’ enough…it was simply WONDERFUL!!! Roxanne Barnes and DR. Mark Windt

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Chateau De Vezins. Our Chateau was charming and quirky as one would expect of a refurbished 18th Century old home. We marveled at the amount of work (and expense) involved in the ongoing renovation. It was amazing to look through the renovation album that tells the story of the dedication and tenacity of the owners! The weather was fantastic during our stay. Perfect for enjoying the incredible gardens, pool, spa and numerous outdoor lounging areas after wine tasting and touring the area. A highlight for us was touring and dining at the nearby Chateau Colbert. The adjacent Japanese Gardens were absolutely stunning! Thank you Fabrice and Gaelle!

When I was a little girl, I used to dream that one day I’d live in a château…

Excerpt from a post written by Amy Davies Pereira of Little House In London

When I was a little girl, I used to dream that one day I’d live in a château, swanning around in beautiful period costume, and lounging on a chaise longue… Ok, so I actually live in a little Victorian terrace in London, but my passion for period properties and all their wonders and features lives on.

A few weeks ago I was invited to visit an 18th century château in the heart of the Loire in France, a dream trip for me, I couldn’t wait to take a step back in time. After a short flight to Nantes we were soon settled at our luxury destination for the night, Château de Vézins.

We were the guests of Marc Deschamps, one of the owners of this stunning building. After a very warm welcome, that included tasting some of the fabulous local wines and a quick tour, it was love at first sight, I was in true interiors heaven. Marc’s passion and respect for this beautiful château and it’s history were soon made very apparent, he’s put his heart and soul into renovating this amazing property.

He’s not alone, Marc, his wife Gaelle and their team have lovingly restored this beautiful historic building to it’s true former glory. From the outset, they decided to undertake the restoration in a way that was respectful of the history and heritage of the building. The attention to detail is second to none, the collection of furniture throughout the château is something else, each one lovingly handpicked and either antique or vintage.

Trying to recapture the original feel of the château was the motivation behind using genuine antique furnishings instead of modern replicas, and entailed sourcing 26 different types of fabrics and matching paint colours to recreate period interiors.

The Château is the Dechamps’ second home, it’s the perfect bolt hole for dreamy weekends away exploring the Loire, that’s if you can tear yourself away from stunning surroundings of the property that is.

Helping the château reclaim its former splendour has been a labour of love. The process was very hands-on with, amongst other things, the Deschamps flying in every weekend for two years to create the French gardens and the families labouring to sand and oil the first section of floors themselves.

The grounds and gardens were in an advanced state of disrepair when they purchased the property, making the task a significant one. Over the course of 10 years, the renovation entailed: Clearing 5 tons of pigeon droppings, replacing 100 broken windows, renovating 77 rooms. Planting 187 trees, 312 flowers and 765 other plants. Pouring 70 tones of gravel to create the allées. Clearing 2,000 m3 of mud out of the moat.

The town of Vézins is quaint and quiet – perfect for a family get away from the bustling city life, there’s a local Boulanger, café, pharmacy, hairdresser and church. The front gate of the château is right on the village square, making it easily accessible whenever you need to go into town.

Local attractions and activities include: a fresh food market in the village square every Tuesday morning, cycling paths in the local forests, horse-riding in the nearby village of Mela, shopping and culture in the nearby town of Cholet. You can also take tours of other nearby châteaus.

Whilst we were there we took a wine tasting boat trip along the Loire, Bruno and Sebastien were our perfect hosts. We sampled five of Sebastien’s delicious wines, were treated with some mouth-watering canapés and got to take in the magical views of the Loire. Bruno handcrafted the boat, it is a traditional flat-bottomed design.

In my short visit to the Loire, I really felt that I immersed myself in French culture. It’s so important to me on a trip away, to truly find out what the destination has to to offer. Staying at the château gave me such an insight into French history, I’m so eager to return and explore this wonderful part of the world again.
